Almost every Korea travel guide tells you "get an eSIM" and moves on. That's fine advice for a solo 5-day trip — and the wrong advice for a lot of other trips. Here's what actually changes the answer.
The three options, honestly
- eSIM: buy online, activate by QR code on arrival, no physical swap. Best when your phone supports it and you're traveling alone or want your own separate data plan per person.
- Physical SIM: pick up at an airport counter, swaps out your existing SIM. Works on phones without eSIM support.
- Pocket Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi egg): one device, rented for the trip, an entire group connects to it. You return the device before you fly out.

The actual mistake
Buying data for the exact number of calendar days you're in Korea, arrival day to departure day. Most plans are sold in fixed blocks (5-day, 8-day) — if your trip is 6 days, you're paying for 8 either way, so it's worth checking whether a longer block is only marginally more expensive than the shorter one before you buy.
